USMNT Gets Boost as Adams and Sargent
Cleared for Copa América Opener
The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) received some good news on the injury front as head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed all 26 players, including midfielder Tyler Adams and forward Josh Sargent, are available for their Copa América opener against Bolivia on Sunday. There were concerns about the fitness of both Adams and Sargent leading up to the tournament. Adams, the team captain, has battled injuries throughout the season, while Sargent suffered a foot injury in mid-May.
Sargent hasn't played since May 16th due to the foot injury and missed both of the USMNT's June friendlies. However, Berhalter indicated that Sargent will be able to contribute in some capacity against Bolivia, although the exact amount of playing time remains unclear.
Adams' Leadership a Positive Sign
Despite limited playing time for his club this season, Adams impressed teammates with his sharpness in training. Defender Chris Richards highlighted Adams' leadership qualities, both on and off the field, which is a key reason for his captaincy.
Field Conditions Not a Worry
Both Berhalter and Richards praised the playing surface at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where the USMNT will face Bolivia. This comes after Argentina players criticized the poor pitch conditions in Atlanta during the tournament's opening match.
USMNT Prepares for Aggressive Bolivia
Berhalter expects Bolivia, the lowest-ranked team in South America, to come out aggressive. He emphasized the importance of adapting to different styles of play throughout the tournament, something the top teams in the world excel at.
Defense Key to Success
While acknowledging the USMNT's ability to create scoring chances, Berhalter believes limiting their opponents' opportunities will be crucial. He highlighted this as a key factor in achieving success in the tournament.
Looking Ahead: Panama and Uruguay
The USMNT will face additional challenges in the group stage as they take on Panama and Uruguay after Bolivia. Berhalter's focus remains on adapting to each opponent and building on the team's strengths.
This is a positive development for the USMNT heading into their Copa América opener. With a full squad available and a focus on adaptability and defense, the team is well-positioned to make a strong showing in the tournament.
