Paris Olympics live updates, results and highlights today

The 2024 Paris Olympics continue on Wednesday with a jam-packed schedule featuring track and field events, the men’s skateboarding park final, Round 1 of women’s golf, women’s basketball quarterfinals, and the artistic swimming team acrobatic medal event.

On the track, the day’s schedule includes four finals, such as the women’s pole vault and men’s 400m, along with Noah Lyles competing in the men’s 200m semifinal. Team USA’s Hobbs Kessler secured his spot in the semifinals of the men’s 800-meter event at Stade de France with a time of 1:46.15, finishing third in his heat. Kessler was in fourth place halfway through the race but managed to surpass Italy's Simone Barontini to qualify.

Bryce Hoppel also advanced by taking an early lead in the final heat and finishing second with a time of 1:45.24. Both Kessler and Hoppel will race in the semifinals on Friday morning, aiming to reach the medal finals on Saturday night. Other American athletes who qualified during the morning session include Shelby McEwen (men’s high jump), Alaysha Johnson, Masai Russell, and Grace Stark (women’s 100m hurdles), and Graham Blanks and Grant Fisher (men’s 5,000m).

Since Michael Phelps retired after the 2016 Rio Games, many athletes have been compared to him. Initially, it was American Caeleb Dressel, but at the Paris Olympics, it’s France’s Léon Marchand who is being hailed as "the next Michael Phelps." However, Dressel emphasized the unique greatness of Phelps, describing him as “not even a once-in-a-lifetime” swimmer but “maybe once in a, I don’t know, end-of-the-world type guy.”
